Blue Skies Above: Emulating Skylights in Office Environments

28th May, 2020

How does one recreate a clear blue sky using just lighting? It is an immense, technologically challenging task that up till now was believed to require a fixture with a thickness of at least 30 to 70 cm — a design that would make it all but impossible to use in any room with a standard ceiling height. However, Mitsubishi Electric has achieved the impossible: an LED skylight with a thickness of 12 cm or less (that’s less than most ceiling lights). Not only that, it’s also capable of producing a skylight effect with a real sense of depth and no shadow blurring.

Water for Life: Realizing Sustainable Water Practices in Society

28th February, 2020

A turn of the faucet handle and out gushes clean water. While it sounds like a commonplace sight, the truth is that many countries face intensifying water problems rooted in such matters as global warming and population growth – particularly in the developing world, where plumbing and water infrastructure remain a distant possibility for some nations. Guaranteeing access to safe, clean water has evolved into a global concern, which makes water treatment processing technologies and management and control systems for water treatment plants vital for future growth. Can you imagine life without clean water? What about a world where it’s available to all?

How DMS is Creating the Future of Mobility — Giving Drivers a Taste of “Omotenashi”

10th January, 2020

When we talk about innovations in mobility, the discussion tends to focus on concepts like autonomous vehicles and Advanced Driver-Assistance System (ADAS). But did you know about the pivotal role played by the Driver Monitoring System (DMS)? It’s an in-car companion that keeps a constant eye on the driver’s alertness, and will soon be able to judge emotional and physical condition as well. With DMS set to become a legal requirement in the EU, we look at the present and future of a technology rooted in the Japanese concept of “omotenashi.”

Towards a Sustainable Society – The Engineers of Tomorrow Gather for the Mitsubishi Electric Cup

10th January, 2020

There is a growing recognition of the need for a sustainable society. However, as the world works together towards meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it is also crucial to consider the people who will be tasked with achieving those targets. As important sectors of society, some of the responsibility for nurturing the next generation lies with companies, universities and research institutes – but how can progress be made? One automation contest, held in various countries and supported by both private corporations and academic institutions, may offer clues as to the ideal route forward for education.

Infinite Space, Big Data: Bringing Data from Outer Space to Earth

12th December, 2019

Satellites: their applications, both on earth and in orbit, continue to expand. One such field is the earth observation solutions business, a market on the ascendant. With some 700 units in orbit, observational satellites collect data invaluable to formulating disaster plans and forest conservation, among other use cases. But we’re only at the frontier as to what this data can do. Many expect that this information could be used in business fields such as agriculture: possibilities that, until now, seemed as distant as outer space.

The Strength of People: Embracing Differences, Conquering Challenges

26th November, 2019

The United Nations reports that there are around 200 million youth with disabilities worldwide. Often misunderstood by society, many disabled people suffer marginalization – excluded from many of the opportunities afforded to non-disabled individuals. Mitsubishi Electric and the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation (MEAF) have dedicated nearly three decades toward guaranteeing equal treatment for all. One manifestation of this was Mitsubishi Electric’s support for the film Intelligent Lives, debuting at film festivals and screenings from April 2018 and broadcast on American television in October 2019 – with ripples in society continuing to spread.

Train Power: How Harnessing Energy from Trains Can Help Run Cities

19th July, 2019

A train isn’t just for commuting – it’s also a widely untapped source of potential power. One little-known fact? The motor that propels a train can be used to generate energy when the rail vehicle is slowing down or stopping – which can then be transformed into electricity for use elsewhere. Mitsubishi Electric has developed advanced equipment that taps into this so-called "regenerative power", enabling the energy to be used to help other trains speed up or even provide power to station buildings.

Water World: How Seawater Can Keep People Connected

27th February, 2019

From sending text messages to watching videos on smartphones, countless actions in daily life depend on a vital component: antennas. A widespread network of metal antennas has long ensured the smooth transmission and reception of radio-frequency waves, making wireless society a reality in the process. But many antennas are on land – with few alternatives when communication is needed out at sea or if a network is knocked out by a storm. Mitsubishi Electric, however, has harnessed something as simple as it is perhaps unexpected to remedy this deficit: seawater, the world’s most abundant resource. Mitsubishi Electric has developed technology to transform a single plume of seawater into an antenna.
