Mitsubishi Electric Automation, Inc. and the Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive - August, 2006

In response to the European Union’s Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO) has committed to eliminate six chemicals from our products and processes. As a MELCO company, Mitsubishi Electric Automation (MEAU) will participate in this effort. Specifically these chemical are

Lead (Pb), Hexavalent Chromium (Cr +6), PBB (flame retardant), Cadmium (Cd), Mercury (Hg) - PBDE (flame retardant)

The current threshold values for the six substances (uniform material base) are as follows: Cd shall be under 100ppm; Hg, Pb, hexavalent Cr, PBB, and PBDE shall be under 1,000ppm.

These chemicals have been targeted for elimination from certain types of electronic products by the European Union. Effective July 1, 2006, certain products containing these materials in excess of the established thresholds are banned from sale in European Union countries. We also anticipate similar legislation in other parts of the world, including the United States and China. China's Ministry of Information Industry is expected to postpone the effective date of the China RoHS law to January 1, 2007.

This elimination is of great importance to all corporations as we seek to compete in the global market.

MEAU has formed a RoHS Committee to address this issue, and we are working with all of our suppliers to spec RoHS-compliant materials for our final products.

Many of MEAU’s products may fall into one of the exemption categories listed by the EU in the RoHS Directive (Exemption for Large Scale Stationary Industrial Tools and/or Exemption for Monitoring and Control Instruments). Although our products may be exempt, we are working to evaluate our compliance status and we intend to eliminate the regulated hazardous substances from our products, as may be necessary, regardless of our exemption status. Many of our products already are RoHS-compliant, while many other products are scheduled to be RoHS-compliant in the near future. If you would like specific information on the RoHS-compliance status of any MEAU product, please contact your sales representative.
